Reading Life

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of books.

In the summer when I was growing up, our library's bookmobile used to come to the top of our street once a week.  I can still conjure up the sounds and smells of that big RV filled with books.  The librarian/driver always had a pile set aside for me.  It was always so difficult to make the books last a whole week.

When I was about 9 or 10, I had read through nearly all the children's library collection.  In the early 1970s there wasn't the volume of Young Adult books that there are today.  I quickly gravitated toward the science fiction and fantasy section and my mother had to come in and sign permission for me to get my adult library card.

I think that may be why I love the YA literature of today.  Reading what my children read has been a joy.  There is a sophistication to YA books that with rare exceptions did not exist when I was young.  Some of my favorite YA authors are Tamora Pierce, Jane Yolen, Diane Duane, and Philip Pullman.

Writing Life

I've written in one form or another since early childhood, including poems, songs, stories, and keeping a journal.  Life demands (including full time work and two children) kept me from writing, but when my youngest turned 5, I began to hear my muse whispering (nagging) again.

I returned to poetry and discovered that the internet was a vital resource and gathering place for far-flung poets.  I stumbled onto Wild Poetry Forum and began to workshop old poems and to write new ones.  Within a few years, I was asked to become a moderator, then a few years later, promoted to head moderator.

Sometime after my 40th birthday, my husband finished a book he'd been reading, threw it across the room in disgust and turned to me saying, "Even you can write better than that."

It was meant as a challenge, not an insult (at least not to me!) and that was the year I wrote "The Wings of Winter."

That year was also what I call my 'crash course in remedial novel writing for the poet.'  Much of what I know now, I learned from writing and critique partners I found at Forward Motion for Writers.  They taught me,  steering me toward resources in print and on the web and I am forever grateful.

Over the course of the following 2 years, I wrote 2 more novels, "MindBlind" and "The House of Many Doors."

My 3 completed novels represent 3 different genres and styles.  I consider myself a reading and writing 'omnivore.'  My favorite genres are fantasy, scifi, speculative fiction, thrillers, and mysteries.  I read and write both YA and adult novels.

I am currently brainstorming for several new novel ideas and returning to "The Wings of Winter" with an eye toward revising it for the YA market.
